Central ornament:Mahr (mandatory)മഹ്ർ
Mahr: A mandatory gift from groom to bride, declared at the Nikah and her sole property by Islamic law. It is not dowry — dowry flows in the opposite direction, is illegal in India, and is a distinct and opposed practice.
Practices described here use "In Sunni Muslimtradition…" or "Many families…" — never universal claims. Ornament weights are indicative community averages from the wedding budget defaults, not requirements.

Kerala Sunni Muslim wedding customs

Kerala Sunni Muslim weddings follow the same fundamental Islamic structure as Mappila weddings — Nikah conducted by a Maulvi, Mahr agreed and given to the bride, Walima reception — with some variation in pre-wedding customs and regional practices.

The Mahr is mandatory by Islamic law, agreed before the Nikah, and becomes the bride's property. As with Mappila tradition, the Mahr must not be conflated with dowry.

Bridal gold

Sunni Muslim bridal gold customs vary by region and family but generally include multiple necklaces, bangles, and earrings. The specific pieces and quantities depend on family tradition and negotiated arrangements.

As with all communities documented here, the descriptions reflect common practice. Individual family customs vary significantly.
