Silver Rate in Kerala: How It's Set, Where to Buy, and What to Know

Everything about silver rates in Kerala — how the daily board rate works, current price per gram and per 100g, where to buy certified silver, and whether silver is worth investing in.

Silver is often overshadowed by gold in Kerala, but it's traded daily and priced by the same body that sets gold rates. If you're looking to buy silver coins, silverware, or invest in the metal, here's everything you need to know.

How the Kerala Silver Rate Is Set

The Kerala Gold & Silver Merchants Association (KGSMA) — the same body that sets the daily gold board rate — also publishes a daily silver rate for the state. Like gold, the rate is uniform across all Kerala districts: Kochi, Trivandrum, Thrissur, Kozhikode, and others all follow the same price on any given day.

The rate is derived from:

  1. International silver spot price (USD/troy oz on COMEX, New York)
  2. INR/USD exchange rate — a weaker rupee means higher silver prices in India
  3. Import duty — basic customs duty applies to silver imports

The KGSMA announces the rate each morning (Monday–Saturday). The market is closed on Sundays.

Silver Purity: What "999" Means

Silver sold in Kerala is standard 999 fine silver (also written as "three nines" or "99.9% purity"). This is the global standard for investment-grade silver and is what you'll find in:

  • BIS-hallmarked silver coins
  • Silver bars from certified refineries
  • MMTC-PAMP silver products

Silverware and jewellery may be of lower purity (925 sterling or 800) but investment products should always be 999.

Silver by Weight: What You'll Pay

At the current rate of roughly ₹280/gram:

| Weight | Approx. Price | |--------|--------------| | 1 gram | ₹280 | | 10 grams | ₹2,800 | | 100 grams | ₹28,000 | | 500 grams | ₹1,40,000 | | 1 kilogram | ₹2,80,000 |

Add 3% GST to all silver purchases.

Where to Buy Silver in Kerala

Banks

SBI and some other banks sell BIS-certified silver coins (primarily 100g and 500g bars). Highly trustworthy but may not repurchase.

Jewellery Chains

Malabar Gold, Kalyan, and Bhima sell certified silver coins alongside gold. Exchange value is clear and documented.

Post Offices (India Post)

India Post sells MMTC-PAMP certified silver coins through select post offices — competitive pricing and a trusted source.

MMTC-PAMP

India's largest precious metals refiner. Available online and through retail partners in Kerala. Swiss-certified, BIS hallmarked.

Silver vs. Gold: The Ratio

One useful metric is the gold-to-silver ratio — how many grams of silver equal one gram of gold. Historically:

  • Ratio of 50–60: Silver is relatively expensive
  • Ratio of 80–100+: Silver is relatively cheap compared to gold

When the ratio is high, silver historically mean-reverts — many precious metal investors rotate from gold to silver at high ratios. The ratio has been above 80 for most of 2024–2026.

Is Silver a Good Investment in Kerala?

Pros:

  • Much lower entry point than gold (₹280/g vs ₹9,800+/g for gold)
  • Same 3% GST as gold — no additional tax disadvantage
  • High liquidity — any jeweller will buy back certified silver
  • Industrial demand (solar, EVs, electronics) adds a demand floor gold doesn't have

Cons:

  • Higher storage cost relative to value (silver is bulky)
  • More volatile than gold — can move 20–30% in short periods
  • No making charge advantage (silver jewellery often has high making charges)
  • Gold remains the cultural and collateral standard in Kerala

Verdict: Silver is best used as a small diversification within a precious metals portfolio. For most Kerala buyers, gold coins or SGBs (Sovereign Gold Bonds) are the primary vehicle — silver makes sense as 5–15% of a precious metals allocation.

Selling Silver in Kerala

Any jeweller or bullion dealer will buy back BIS-certified silver, typically at 96–98% of the day's board rate. For large quantities (over ₹2 lakh), PAN card is required per income tax rules.
